Brewery Spotlight: Southern Tier Brewery
Another brewery that my favorite drinking destination, the Homegrown Cafe, has introduced me to, is the Southern Tier Brewery.
A relative baby in brewing, Southern Tier was formed in 2004 by Allen “Skip” Yahn and Phineas “Phin” Demink, both formerly of Ellicottville Brewing Co. The brewery currently only distributes to 25% of the U.S., but is growing rapidly as it continues to introduce tasty seasonal beers in various formats.
Location
If you live in the upstate New York area, give the brewery a shot. Tours are given every Saturday at 4, and you can always check out their empty pint page to see what beers they currently have on tap. Note that the pub is only open on Fridays and Saturdays only.
Beers Available From Southern Tier
Beers available from Southern Tier include:
- phin & matt’s extraordinary ale (American Pale Ale)
- ipa (India Pale Ale)
- porter (Robust Dark Porter)
- tripel (Belgian Style Ale)
- big red (Imperial Red Ale)
- un-earthly (Imperial India Pale Ale)
- jah-va (Imperial Coffee Stout)
They also have a number of seasonal beers available:
- old man (Winter Ale)
- harvest ale (Extra Hoppy Bitter)
- hop sun (American Wheat Ale)
- chautauqua brew (Amber Ale - local distribution only)
- heavy wizen (Imperial unfiltered Wheat Ale)
- uber-sun (Summer Wheat Beer)
And coming this fall (which is right around the corner…)
- pumpking (Imperial Pumpkin Ale)
- oat (Imperial Oatmeal Stout)
I have had the pleasure of trying both their IPA and Bid Red Ales, and they both satisfied my hop addiction. Ask your local vendor or store if they can order Southern Tier, and if and when you try it, let us know what you think!
