Oktoberfest Is Upon Us!
Yeah, yeah yeah, I know. It’s September. Or so the calender says. My stomach and my brain, however, knows it’s really Oktober!
With fall (which is by far the BEST time of the year) comes one of the most popular styles of microbrews around: Oktoberfest!
History
For around two-hundred years, Munich has been the home of Oktoberfest, a two + week festival where everyone gets together to eat, drink, and be merry.
Many of us all over the world throw our own Oktoberfest events as well!
It was here that the style of the Oktoberfest beer has its origins. The beer is a simple, easy to drink brew (which is one of the reasons why it is so popular). It is a classic style lager with a medium-to-full body (depending on the specific beer) and a malty sweet flavor. The style you probably drink today is a lighter version of the classic Marzen lager that was served at Oktoberfest for many, many years.
Here is a video of just some of the fun that went down at last years Oktoberfest! Warning! Clicking play will result in content that may or may not be offensive.
Almost every microbrewery and brewpub will offer an Oktoberfest this fall; the next time you order one, make sure to inquire as to how the beer was made, and maybe you’ll learn a little bit about how that brewery made the beer, or what they decided to do to make it different (or why they chose to keep it traditional).
Recommendations
If you’re hitting the cold box, here’s a few recommended verisons of Oktoberfest you can try. Maybe you’ll sample a few and compare the differences with them as well.
