I liked this Southern Tier brew right from the start — right from the moment I put it into my shopping cart to the moment I finished it. And to quote a friend of mine who tasted this with me, “Unearthly = liquid sex.” So here we go.

Introduction

Southern Tier Unearthly Imperial IPA Bottle and Glass

Unearthly has the following stats:

  • 11% ABV
  • 153 IBU
  • 2 row pale and Cara-pils malts
  • Red wheat
  • Kettle hops - Chinook and Cascade
  • Hop back - Styrian Golding
  • Dry Hopped - Cascade, Centenial, and Chinook

The commercial description from RateBeer.com goes a little something like this:

An Uninhibited Infusion of Hops. We continue our commitment to innovation with our most aggressive offering yet Unearthly is a manifestation of the brewers crafts skillfully balancing art and the forces of nature to produce a divine liquid. Delicately pour a taste into a fluted glass. Smell the enchanting aromas of the hops come forward as your first sip divulges this beer’s fervent soul. To underestimate Unearthly is to trifle with the mysteries of the universe so please consume wisely.

FYI: I drank Unearthly out of my Tripel Karmeliet glass at what I would guess to be about 50°F (42°F was the suggested temperature).

Pour

Poured a medium to dark orange-ish amber in color with a two-finger, off-white, eggshell head that dissipated after a few minutes and left some lacing.

Aroma

Somewhat sweet in smell (caramel malts?). However, also fairly hoppy (Chinook and Cascade hops?). Mostly floral with slight alcohol notes.

Flavor

Medium to full body that’s somewhat sweet up front with a fade to bitter in the middle. Finished a little sweet with some floral hops, some alcohol notes, and an acceptable lingering aftertaste.

Overall

Overall, I’d have to give Southern Tier Un*Earthly an A-. I thought it was delicious, not overpowering, and highly drinkable for an 11% ABV beer. If you like IPAs you’ll love this one!

There seems to be some discrepancies between the information I got off of the Unearthly bottle and the Southern Tier website. I’ll see what I can do to clear this all up…

“Liquid Sex”! That’s a great tag I’m sure someone is going to steal…
