Through the course of our lives we have several hobbies that come and go. From year to year certain hobbies pique our interests and then fall out of our favor as work and other activities take over the free time your particular pursuits of leisure use to. And personally I know I am always looking for a new interests and finding different ways to spend my free time.

About a year ago I came to a realization. That one of my interests could be taken further and expanded to a new frontier and I’ve been extremely satisfied that I chose to take it up. I love beer, I’m interested in how beer is made, and the various nuances and styles of beer. I thought to myself, the next logical step in pursuing my love of beer was to try to make some myself. I’m speaking of homebrewing and why it has been such an interesting and convenient endeavor for me, but I’m sure it could be for you as well.

Homebrewing is Inexpensive

homebrewequip.jpgAs with many new hobbies there will be an initial start-up cost if you want to make a good attempt at making your own special brew. But luck for you the necessary materials needed can cost you as low as $40-$50. This is assuming you go out an buy a starter kit or the accoutrement’s individually. You could of coarse take a large glass carboy or a cleaned and sanitized 5 gallon pickle bucket and with some some elbow grease and a handyman attitude, you’ve got yourself a couple of fermenters.

Also keep in mind that beer is made from four simple ingredients:

  • Water
  • Malted Grain
  • Hops
  • Yeast

None of these are expensive
so once you get the equipment to start brewing you won’t need to shell out too much money to continue this new interest, which is more than I can say for many of the activities that one can pursue. And since you’ll be brewing your own beer, that will cut down on the cost of buying beer somewhere else (although you will need to brew a few batches before the savings of brewing catch up to the equipment you buy).

Easy to Learn

Most people are only concerned with the consumption of beer and may only contemplate the amount of effort that goes into making the beer. Take it from me or ask someone you may who has attempted a batch of their own homebrew; it’s not hard. If you have between two and five hours and a cool dry place to keep your fermenter, you’re in business. Although the process can involve sanitizing your equipment, a couple measurements here and there, and a little lifting, it is learned quickly and can easily be done from start to finish on a Saturday afternoon. And just like anything in life, it is best to learn by doing!

Actually familiarizing yourself to the beer making process and going through it is fun and teaches you many things about beer you never thought you’d know. So your new hobby is interesting and won’t take up to much of your time, which can be quite beneficial with increasing demands from long work weeks, family, and other social outlets eat away at your precious spare time.

Satisfaction

Once you’ve bought the equipment, learned how to brew, and implemented your new knowledge you will have completed your first batch of beer, there’s a powerful feeling. Whether or not your beer tastes like an award winning craft beer deserving medals from beer tasters across the globe is irrelevant. The satisfaction you can get from drinking a beer that you made and sharing that with your friends and family is unique. It’s also a talent that can become a lifetime venture. You can brew beer for the rest of your life while gaining skill, experience, and enjoyment from the effort you put into it.

So if this little peak into the benefits of homebrewing has raised your suspicion or you’ve been thinking about it for awhile, but never had the time or the drive, now is the time. Try it out, but before you do take a look at these past articles, they can give you some great incites into homebrewing. Happy brewing.

Much agreed, I think once people find out that homebrewing is really FUN and just about anyone can do it, it’ll be an even more popular hobby. Thanks for the article.
