hops.jpgJust got word that the Boston Beer Co., makers of the Sam Adams line of beers, is lending a hand to craft brewers by offering up it’s hop stash.

Brewers worldwide are dealing with an increasing hop shortage, driving up prices and making supplies hard to come by. Sam Adams knows this is affecting microbrewery operations, and is offering to sell some 20,000 pounds of delicious hops to the microbrewing community at cost!

This is great to see, a little chivalry in the beer community. Sam Adams is probably the largest “craft” beer producer, and they could easily give the middle finger to the community if they wanted to. Kudos for those in the Sam Adams PR department by offering these hops to brewers who so desperately need them.

Very cool of them. I think most of our local breweries (with maybe the exception of Twin Lakes) hear from their suppliers that something was coming - Ric Hoffman told me a while ago that Stewarts was locked into a couple years worth of contracts pretty early in the game, like 6 months before the “crisis” became mainstream news and widely discussed - So I assume they are OK. I can only assume that Iron Hill did the same.

Last time I spoke with Jack at Twin Lakes, he indicated they were still buying on the spot market, and I know they go through like 36 lbs of Cascade hops per batch (72 if you count per full fermenter - it takes 2 batches to fill one) of their Pale Ale, so that’s not anything to sneeze at… Hope their doing Ok.
